My Students

As a special education teacher who works in a highly diverse, low socioeconomic, Title 1 elementary school, I have the privilege of working with some wonderful students who want to learn and achieve amazing things in their future. For twenty-two years, I had always taught and worked with high school students. Desiring a change, and a challenge, I decided to make a transition to the world of elementary school. I have yet to have any regrets.

Central Elementary School not only instructs students in the area of academics, but it also promotes a positive environment of teaching responsibility, showing respect to adults and peers, and maintaining a safe learning community where they can grow into productive and successful adults.

Many of the students that I work with come from poverty stricken homes and live with parents or relatives who never graduated high school.

Like all children, the students that we work with who have special needs, want to experience all that life and education has to offer as well. They want to learn new things, and be apart of this wonderful school and all it has to offer them.

My Project

Many of the students I work with do not have opportunities at home to play and interact with peers in a safe and nurturing environment. Playing video games are often used as a babysitter and unfortunately takes the place of conversation and relationships. I would like to start a club at my school where students get to learn how to play good old fashioned board games.

The purpose of the club will be to encourage social interaction with other students in a positive and fun atmosphere, while learning lifelong skills such as effective communication, good sportsmanship, cooperation, taking turns, as well as incorporating reading and math skills, simply by playing games.

Not video games!

The club would also allow students, who may not typically get involved in anything else, to be apart of something, to give them a sense of belonging and acceptance among their peers. Playing the games will require students to practice their reading, math, and writing skills.
