This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Childhood obesity is becoming more and more a problem. Especially in this day of fast-food conveniences and sitting behind a screen, it's easy for students to pick up bad habits.
My students are 30 beautiful first-graders; part of a K-5 elementary school in the inner city.
It is economically challenging, and at times dangerous. Most live in high-density apartments with crowded sidewalks and high traffic. As a result, they do not play outside after school. Their only real play and exercise opportunity is at school.
My Project
First grade is a wonderful time to teach children about making good choices, including maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The playing balls will be a great way to practice coordination, balance, and motor skills. This equipment will show students that exercise is fun, and good for you! The tug of war rope will teach teamwork and sportsmanship. Hopefully, they will realize at a young age, the value of physical fitness, and the daily importance of it.
All students should know what good health feels like.
With these materials, I can better introduce exercise in fun and creative ways. With regular exercise, students will not only feel healthy, but they'll understand the importance of regular exercise. As a result, my students can develop habits that will impact their families, and future adult lives.
