My Students

My students are studying at a high poverty school in a rural area. Many of my students lack resources with it comes to purchasing basic school supplies. These students are high-schoolers, many of them work outside jobs besides being students. Many of them are helping to support their families outside of school.

My students are special because they are hard workers who are motivated to learn.

The courses I teach in high school may be the last science experience they ever have, and to me that means doing my best to make it meaningful and interesting.

My Project

An Electrophoresis set and reagents are essential tools for understanding how DNA is used to solve crimes. These resources will make a difference in helping my students understand how DNA is used to solve crimes.

Forensics class allows students to learn science in an interesting and productive way.

With this DNA electrophoresis kit and reagents my students will be able to separate and read DNA bands just like at a real crime lab. This will help them to understand the real life applications and limitations to the application of DNA science to crime solving. DNA is interesting and mysterious to most students, and I hope to use these resources to demystify the science around the media hype.
