My students need grade level mathematical games to develop higher thinking skills in a fun, exciting way!

I am currently a 5th grade teacher at a Title One school. This is my first year at this particular school. Even though it is a great school, it comes with many challenges. I teach language arts, math, and social studies. My students are primarily African-American, with a few other ethnic groups sprinkled in, and come from low-income and high-stress environments. The economy in the state of Michigan is negatively affecting their educational progress. Our school strives for excellence in education but, due to budget cuts and deficits, our students are not given the tools they need to succeed.

My students work very hard to learn a new skill or strategy in math before they have to move on to the next lesson. Before they know it, the test is upon them and they have had no opportunity for review, reinforcement or practice. This deficit is reflected in their assessments. The day before we take a quiz or test, I try to look for creative ways to review or reinforce the skills to be assessed. We play games on the board, but with 32 children, keeping their attention is very difficult at times. Small group review sessions are almost impossible because the students themselves lack interest in the topic. A fun, interesting way to reinforce mathematical skills could possibly bridge that gap in their assessments.

I have chosen a variety of mathematical reasoning, vocabulary, and logistical games for reinforcement activities. Some packages include a variety of games. I thought this would guarantee all 32 students could actively participate in an activity. Some games I chose address a variety of 5th grade exit skills. Some just reinforce a particular skill. For example, the game "Budget" practices money skills. The game "Mathwords" reinforces mathematical vocabulary. I will use these games prior to a quiz or test to help them feel confident and prepared. Students will hopefully become very excited about math!

A lot of children fear math. Your donation will ensure my students will feel more confident with their mathematical abilities. These games allow for a comfortable, friendly environment that promotes mathematical thinking. It's amazing to think that just a couple of games you help our classroom purchase will make a huge difference in their attitudes towards math. I am confident that I will not only see a new found excitement towards mathematics, but an increase in their grades.
