This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember how much fun it was to do "Back-to-School" shopping at the end of the summer? Arriving on the first day of school with supplies in hand? My students don't get to experience this. Many arrive on the first day of school without supplies because their families can't afford them.

I work in a very low income, high-need school in the heart of Southern California.

My students come from high poverty homes where parents work two jobs to make ends meet. My students don't have the basic necessities they should in order to function properly in a challenging and engaging upper grade classroom. The children are motivated, vibrant students with a strong desire to succeed and learn. They appreciate the materials they are handed, and long to have supplies to call their own.

My Project

A successful classroom starts right from the beginning. School supplies are the fundamental tools needed to stay organized and efficient, especially in upper grades. When students are provided with pencils to write, spiral notebooks for note-taking, markers for projects, and pencil cases to keep all these materials, it is easier for them to focus on the lesson, thus grasp the content being taught. The distraction of scrambling for a sharpened pencil or a piece of paper affects the whole classroom environment by wasting time and energy. There is no time to waste in my productive classroom. I have such high hopes for the students, and want to make sure that they are given the opportunity to experience the most meaningful and engaging year possible.

With your generous donations, my students will stay organized and focused on learning, rather than spending time finding materials.

They will have the basic supplies they need (such as pencils, spiral notebooks, markers, and pencil cases) to fully experience the fifth grade year, and be successful while doing so. I want nothing more than to start the year off right by exciting my students with the materials they deserve.
