For the Love of Reading

Help me give my students books that they will love. These books will reflect their diverse perspectives, promote social-emotional growth, and help them to be more conscious of the world around them.

My Students

My students are curious, compassionate, and resilient. Over last year's distance learning period, I've seen them find comfort in books more than ever before. Living in Hawaii, my students have the unique problem of being part of an extremely diverse community while being isolated from the rest of the world on an island.

They need books that will represent the diversity of their experiences while allowing them to see how the other half lives.

My Project

My junior English Language Arts students select a book every quarter to read at home. They create and present beautiful projects to their classmates to review their books. When I help my students choose a book custom-tailored to their interests, they fall in love with reading all over again.

Having a classroom library with diverse, high-interest books will empower my students to rekindle their love of reading, to learn more about the world, and to find comfort in a book that is just right for them.

This past year, many of my students have been reading eBooks due to ease of access and because they've gotten used to using their screens for everything. I would love to get some physical books into their hands.
