Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 30 early readers in my classroom, that are eager to develop a life long love of reading. A majority of my students live at poverty levels where books are not readily available at home.
My students are full of curiosity, wonder and have a thirst for knowledge.
Literacy is one of the most critical skills for a child's development. Two-thirds of America's children living in low-income have no books at home.
When children learn to read at an early age, they have greater knowledge, expand their vocabulary and become more fluent readers. Their proficiency in reading enables them to comprehend more of what they are reading.
One of the most successful ways to improve the reading achievement of children is to increase their access to books, especially at home.
My Project
Students will be able to choose a book to take home to read and start their at -home library. They will also have the opportunity to leave a book for someone else to enjoy. Our Little Free Library will play an essential role by providing 24/7 access to books (and encouraging a love of reading!) for our school community.
Take a Book - Share a Book!
Having a Little Free Library Book Exchange can help address the crisis by bringing access to a variety of books to my students.
“The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Orange Coast has generously awarded our school a Collective Impact Grant, which will match dollar for dollar all funds raised through DonorsChoose.org for a maximum of $2,000 per school. This matching grant means we can double your donation and make our funds go even further! The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Orange Coast is a valued partner in our community and serves over 8,000 youth in the cities of Santa Ana, Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Irvine, & Orange! Thanks to the Boys & Girls Club of Central Orange Coast, these challenge grants expect to invest $12k directly into our classrooms and fund several DonorsChoose projects throughout the Orange Unified School District!”
