Help me give my students an in-class library by giving them a shelf for literary works where they can explore different genres and topics, while fostering a love for literature.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
In my English II class, I have personalized every square inch of my class to fit the culture and dynamic of my students. I have my desk, student desks, and chairs, but not shelving for literary works that I have collected over the years. A personal library can encourage students to explore different genres and topics, fostering a love for literature. When students have access to shelves filled with books, they can independently select reading materials that interest them. This autonomy encourages a sense of responsibility for their learning journey. By owning their reading choices, students are more likely to engage with the material and develop critical thinking skills. A library can facilitate a conducive learning environment. A well-organized classroom with ample reading materials creates a welcoming atmosphere that nurtures a literacy culture. Students feel inspired to spend time reading, whether it’s during designated reading periods or free time. This improves their reading comprehension and vocabulary and instills a lifelong habit of reading for pleasure, especially the beautiful works of Zora Neale Hurston, Chinua Achebe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, and many others. Your generosity of investing in shelves for our classroom can empower students to become lifelong readers and learners. Thank you so much!
