Help me give my students the opportunity to learn about important cultural traditions and expand their understanding of the Spanish language while fostering an appreciation of diversity.
I teach Spanish in a very rural, farm community. My students are hard-working and eager to learn. Many have never left the town they go to school in, or have only ventured within county limits. There are many who are part of the local 4-H community and raise livestock, pigs, or poultry for fairs and other shows. For many, this means waking up extremely early to feed and water the animals long before the school day has begun. These added responsibilities have helped to nurture caring and thoughtful attitudes in so many of my students.
My students are eager to learn and crave more exposure to culturally rich activities and experiences.
Because of the small town they live in, these experiences have been pretty limited. While some will grow up, go away for college and experience a cultural change in this manner, many others may never leave their hometown.
My Project
In our district, some students are learning at home, while others are learning face-to-face in the classroom. Our district is prepared to move to completely remote learning should safety protocols deem it necessary. This resource will be used both in class and at home for the time being. Should we move completely remote, each student will have a copy to read in their own home as they learn online with teacher guidance and instruction.
Regardless of where students are reading this novel, they will be able to experience a cultural adventure and improve their understanding of Spanish in the process.
This novel will also help to boost student confidence in their language skills as they find they can understand the text with ease. Speaking a second language will provide immeasurable advantages to these young people now and in their futures.
