Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come to school each day, ready to learn and explore the world around them. They are inquisitive, full of energy, and aren't afraid to take risks. Each has their own unique learning styles and thrive with opportunities for creativity, teamwork, and collaboration. Unfortunately, since distance learning began, these opportunities to be creative and explore the world around them have been taken away. As their teacher, it is my responsibility to continue to nurture and develop their learning styles with the use of creative art techniques to help keep their inventive and creative minds engaged!

Many students in my classroom are at home without the basic tools to elicit any creative activity because sadly, those tools are not readily available to them at home.

I teach an art lesson a day to help keep their anxious and worried minds off of what is going on in the world today. This has become one of their favorite parts of distance learning.

My Project

One of the things my students enjoy most about our daily Zoom meetings is when I do my art lessons. This is the one activity they like doing daily. My students get to be creative, express themselves, and get their thoughts off of some of the harsh realities their families are experiencing due to this tragic pandemic. One thing I notice during these art lessons is their lack of art materials. Some do not have white printing paper to draw on. At times, I see some using lined composition paper or the back of an old bill to complete their artwork. This lack of such a basic component prevents them from really developing their full creative potential.

These sketchpads would give me the freedom to go more in-depth into developing a love of art and in turn tap into their creative minds.

For example, I would continue to teach my students about the "Artist of the Month" as we did before this virus changed our lives. These sketchpads would give them the opportunity to be more detailed and practice art techniques and styles of different artists. Who knows, these sketchpads could be the springboard to helping a child become the next Picasso!
