My students need binoculars and magnifiers to see the wonders of nature that exist down on the ground and up in the sky.

My Students
This year, my class was chosen to participate in a local program focused on enviromental education. The program combines classroom learning with action research projects, allowing students to make deeper connections with the natural world around them. Although our Title I school is located in a tough neighborhood where gray concrete is more prevalent than the green of grass and trees, this local program has helped my students recognize that there is still nature right here, where they live and go to school.
One of the most exciting moments was when students learned to use binoculars to view and study birds.
As you might expect, bird watching is not a typical hobby in the neighborhood in which they live. So this experience was new to every single student, and all you could hear was excited whispers, "Ohhh, look at that!" or "Wait, wait, is that red on the tail?" or "What do you see, what do you see?" Nearly all of my students wanted to know how they could share these experiences with their families and bring their families to the understanding of how close and wonderful nature is.
My Project
My students loved using the binoculars during their action research project, but each student had a mere 10-15 minutes to learn to use this new tool. They had barely had time to learnhow to adjust the focus and use this tool effiently when their turn was up. Our experience whetted their appetite for learning more about birds, and bugs, and everything else nature has to offer.
However, to truly allow my students to realize their potential as future environmentalists, scientists, or simply citizens who enjoy and value nature, I must foster this initial excitement with sustained study of the environment.
To do so, my students and I would love to have binoculars and better quality magnifiers so we can clearly see what is below and above us. Additionally, with these tools easily accessible at school, I envision my students leading nature tours of the playground with younger students and even their parents at events like Open House. These tools will be valued by my current students, as well as all of my future students.
