This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There are more than just pigeons in a big city! Yes, the fifth graders in my low income, culturally diverse class learn this lesson as we become ornithologists exploring our city parks and neighborhoods for beautiful birds. Instead of video games and television, bird watching is a valuable activity my group of 30 students enjoy immensely; whether during school or at home, my students learn to appreciate the beauty, diversity, and adaptations of these feathered animals.
"Look over there!"
"Where? Where?" "I cannot see it."
"Pass the binoculars", whisper thirty ten year olds.
Unfortunately, that is what our bird watching trips sound a lot like. As a naturist, I find time during our busy academic schedule to bring the class bird watching. Finding a location is easy and there are hundreds of birds to observe. The challenge is getting the students to see them. We work on our volume control and our observation skills, but without the correct supplies -- it is impossible! If we had 15 binoculars to share in partnerships, my class would be able to observe birds with greater ease, truly seeing the enjoyment of this hobby. A class set of real binoculars (not the fake ones we made out of paper towel rolls) would turn my students into true bird watchers.
The Classic Series Binoculars would be a valued addition to our field trips, neighborhood walks, and our Science program. My students will benefit by using true scientific equipment to view animals in their natural habitat. Not only will their knowledge of birds, science, and nature increase, but so will their self-esteem as they learn to bird watch just like real ornithologists do.
Your help with this project will not only impact the lives of my fifth grade students, you will be ensuring that our future generations will appreciate the beauty and diversity of our amazing planet. Help an urban child see the world for all the amazing things it can be! Please.
