Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
All of my students are English Language Learners. Some of them have been in the US for a few days, some of them for a few years, and all of them are working hard on becoming proficient in English and math. Every day we work on developing their language skills so they can participate in academic discussions, think critically about the content and world around them, and meet their goals of academic excellence. They face seemingly insurmountable odds and do so with grace. They are students in an urban school that is among the lowest performing schools in the state (we are a Level 4 turnaroud school), where over 80% of students are 'high needs' and 61% are 'economically disadvantaged.' Still, they are present every day, ready and willing to learn.
My Project
The use of a document camera will allow students to explain their mathematical thinking as well as follow alongside with me. Having students come to the board solves the communication problem, but it can be very time consuming and unwieldy to have several students in each class come to the board.
A document camera allows students to be a part of interactive learning experience and quickly and easily display their work directly to their peers.
A document camera also promotes classroom discussions and questions that will allow us to overcome misconceptions and clarify students' understandings. It also allows me as a teacher to take pictures of exemplars to share with other classes.This would be a great advantage in the classroom that will allow students to express and explain their thinking. My students are active learners who would benefit from discussing their learning as whole group.
