Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are shrewd, savvy, brave, resilient, and wise beyond their years. They attend a Title I School in the South Bronx and live in one of the poorest neighborhoods in New York City. This is also the lowest academically performing school district in New York. Despite these challenges, they are eager to learn when provided with the opportunity and resources. Our school offers a safe space for them to grow and flourish. We have an exceptionally strong social support system, with counselors working with small groups of students on an ongoing basis from grades 6 to 12 to ensure they graduate from high school and enroll in college.

When my students enter the classroom and see an experiment set up, they are excited and curious and want to start exploring right away.

Most of my students come from homes where academic enrichment opportunities outside of school are limited. My students truly appreciate any of the extras we can bring into the classroom.

My goal is to create an exciting, positive, learning environment for my students to explore the world around them.

My Project

I have an amazing group of 8th graders. These kids are bright, inquisitive, hard-working, and well-mannered. They will be studying immigration in their US History Regents class. A visit to the Tenement Museum's "Under One Roof" tour will teach them about a source of NYC's diverse multicultural background. I would love to have my students experience some of NYC's diversity through food.

My students live in one of the most diverse cities in the world, and yet many have never ventured beyond the South Bronx, and few have ever had authentic Asian food.

I remember the first time I had sushi, I was already in college. My parents worked long hours and didn't have the resources to take us to many places. However, we were fortunate to experience many of the rich cultural offerings of this city through school trips. There were so many class trips to museums, zoos, parks, movies, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, beaches, etc...

I would like to extend the same opportunities to my own students. NYC is a beautiful mosaic of peoples and cultures from around the world. My students should take advantage of our proximity to these world cultures and venture forth to explore. Food is culture! Let's start there. They are eager and excited to try new foods. Let's give them the opportunity.

(It was suggested that we bring bagged school lunches, but that would considerably diminish my students' trip experience.)
