My Project
I am a reading teacher for grades kindergarten-5th grade at a Title I school in NC. Our students are a diverse group who speak a variety of languages, come from many different places, engage in various extracurricular activities, and embrace countless new experiences. What they all have in common is their desire to learn.
Many students arrive at school each day without access to consistent or nutritious meals.
Hunger impacts attention, energy levels, emotional regulation, and academic performance—creating preventable challenges in the classroom. Teachers frequently report students struggling to concentrate, becoming easily frustrated, or exhibiting behavioral issues related to hunger. The items in this project will help to address food insecurity, a lack of healthy snack options during the instructional day, and the academic and social consequences of hunger. The Reese's, though not nutritious, are a favorite treat of my students, so they will be distributed to each student on our last day before holiday break.
By providing reliable access to nutritious food, I can ensure that all students—regardless of circumstances—can fully engage in learning.
