I teach children with varying exceptionalities such as specific learning disabilities, autism, vision impairment, and cerebral palsy. My students are at least two grade levels behind their same-age peers.
We are a Title I school which means many of the children come from impoverished backgrounds.
They have parents who have many challenges. Many students are part of the Hunger Project which helps feed them on weekends.
In my room, the students are able to work on their level and at the pace they need. We are trying to ensure that they get the most out of their education.
My Project
My classroom was combined with the 4th, 5th and 6th grade Special Needs class and it has taken a toll on our food supply. These students are very hungry all of the time. They ask for snacks all day long, so we always try to have Welch's Fruit Gummi snacks and Goldfish crackers on hand. We use the small snack foods to motivate students to work hard and stay focused. They are ready for a planned snack at around 9:30, so we'd like to provide them with Flamin Hot Frito Lay chips, since they love the spicy foods. They also ask for snacks as treasure box at the end of the day, as they often go home to an empty cupboard.
