Our high school is what most places call a "magnet school." Students come from all over the city to take a test in order to attend. Our high school is arguably the most racially diverse with about one-fourth of our students being African-American, Asian, Latino, and white.
More than 50% of our students are from families below the federal poverty level.
Nonetheless, we have a 100% college acceptance rate. Our students work hard, but they need more than what the district provides.
My Project
My students come to class eager to learn but sometimes they are hungry. Other times students stay after school for practice or tutoring but there is no place for them to get food.
By providing healthy snacks and warm drinks, I can keep the students fueled up for the day.
I already have a hot and cold water dispenser in the classroom. The students can make warm oatmeal and/or tea or could get a cool drink of water with the items in this project.
This year I have two senior boys who ask me for oatmeal in the morning, and one girl who asks for granola bars to take with her on the way home. Sadly, I'm sure there are more students like them that I'm just not aware of.
