My Students

Our student body is 85% African American, with the remaining 15% being a combination of Asian, Latino, and Caucasian students. These students are excited about education, and many are driven by family members from all over the city just so they can be a part of our great tradition. About 60% of our students live at or below the poverty level.

We are a Title I school, with 25% of our students being visually impaired.

My second grade students are exceptionally bright, and they need to be captivated, challenged, and motivated to achieve.

My Project

Teaching in an urban school district is no cakewalk! Schools often lack the basic supplies to provide students with a quality education. Additionally, students come to school with many obstacles, one of which is hunger. Unfortunately this keeps our kiddos from doing their best. Just think about how you feel when you don’t have that cup of coffee in the morning? Tired right? Our students feel the same way without food!

Chronic hunger can prevent students from making the most of a formal education, no matter how hard they try to ignore its effects.

The sad truth is that hunger can have physical and psychological effects on young people that make learning substantially difficult. Funding this project will enable my students to have healthy snacks and keep their brains growing strong each day. Rather than focusing on hunger, they will be able to focus on learning, exploring, and growing as productive members of society.
