My Students

My students are awesome! Despite high poverty and low income being a common way of life for the majority of my students, they come to school ready to learn. I want to provide them with not only a stable environment, but one filled with positive and rewarding experiences. My school is a Title 1 school where 75% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch.

My students come from different backgrounds and life situations with school being a place where they can feel safe and be themselves.

My students love to be active and in motion around the classroom. They love to participate in group activities. They are intelligent, hard-working, creative learners. They are eager to grow and learn. They want to show me just how far they can go.

My Project

Cooking and healthy eating go hand and hand. In todays' world of fast food, microwave meals and packaged snacks, many of my students do not know the importance of real food. They do not understand that fresh fruits and vegetables taste really great.

My students love to eat, however it isn't always very healthy.

I had a conversation one day with my students about their snack choices. The majority of them like their snacks to come in a plastic bag that has words like hot and spicy or are super sugary, or may even contain two or three servings. They didn't see anything wrong with their choices. We talked about calories and what the body needs to work properly.

I asked my students to develop a plan where they would be willing to try eating healthier. After much discussion, they asked to be able to try cooking at school and wanted to put it into our project based learning time block. Several mentioned that not only would they be able to include nutrition, but also math due to all the measuring they would be doing. Many of them thought it would be fun to make their own class cookbook with all the recipes they liked. They were then asked to put together a list of materials that would help them with their project. With all the incredible cooking supplies out there, it was hard to narrow the list down. I love to see the excitement in their eyes at the thought of trying something new!
