Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds. As the largest high school in our Upstate SC school district, our counseling office is a busy place. Many times the only consistent caring adults in our student's lives are found at the school.
Most would never guess that many of our amazing students are struggling daily with emotional, social, identity and academic challenges.
Many feel the need to measure their worth by the number of "likes" or "followers" they acquire and their resiliency is constantly being challenged. What they all really want is to know that they are loved, and valued just as they are.
Last year with the help from a local church we were able to send food home each week-end with 16 of our most needy students. In many cases we know that not only did this food allow students (and often times the family) to eat but also was a major reason they continued to come to school at all. It showed the student and their families that we did care, did not judge, and we were allies in their child's education. If students go hungry they can't focus on learning.
Through the food backpack program students will be able to simply focus on the academic material at hand, and not on their hunger.
We are currently starting out the year without any backpacks to continue this program. We saw wonderful results last year however most of the backpacks will have gotten lost by the student recipients over the summer from when we sent home food the last week of school. We need the backpacks to discreetly send home the food items with our students.
By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve their nutrition, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.
