Have you ever been so busy trying to prevent your stomach from growling and embarrassing you that you stopped paying attention to what was happening around you? Can you imagine trying to learn Algebra, Chemistry, Physics, History or a Foreign Language when all you can think about is how hungry you are? By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement. Students will be able to simply focus on the academic material at hand, and not on their hunger. The majority of our students ride a bus to school and often times the bus arrives after the school cafeteria has closed for breakfast. For many of these students even though they would qualify for free lunch their parents have not followed through with filling out the form and submitting it which must be done each year for the student to receive free or reduced lunch. After the student has accumulated a week's worth of lunch charges they are no longer able to charge their lunch and must then go without if they can't pay. Students view counselors as a safe place to get their basic needs met and will often come to us when they are hungry. By having a variety of protein-rich snacks, such as meat sticks, granola bars, peanut butter crackers, and cup-a-soups available, students can curb their hunger and concentrate on their academics.
