My students need a refrigerator; 10 books including Healthy Snacks to Go, Superfood Smoothies, and Healthy Snacks for Kids; a yogurt maker and a blender.
Julia Child said that no one is born a great cook, one learns by doing. My students want to learn to cook and then create their own healthy snack cook book. They need help. They need supplies and classroom refrigerator.
We are located near two military bases, and many of my students are the children of deployed military personnel.
My students are racially and ethnically diverse--39% Anglo; 14% African American/Black; 16% Alaskan Native and American Indian; 7% Asian; 6% Hispanic; 3% Filipino; 15% multiracial. Ten percent are in bilingual/bi-cultural programs or ELL. Over 60% of my students qualify for free and reduced breakfast/lunch but we are not a Title I school. We have all the needs but none of the resources of other economically depressed schools. Although they represent the very best in America, many students do not have the funds for frills like books, snacks or food. Some of my military kids are bullied because they are new kids or different. When they bring food from home it does not look like the food that everyone else is eating. My students want to study and taste different foods. We need a Food Court Maker Space so we can create foods and share culture.
My Project
I am requesting refrigerator, 10 books about food, a yogurt maker, and a blender. I plan to create a Food Court Maker Space in my media center so that my students can explore and create foods, smoothies and snacks. My fifth grade foodies will be learning about food preparation, nutrition and healthy snacks as they travel around the world with their tummies. My military kids can share recipes from different places. Kids will be creating snacks and eventually creating a cookbook to share with the entire school. Right now, free and reduced breakfast and lunches are often the only food some students have. Weekends and holidays are not days of celebration but they are days with special problems. On those days they may have nothing to eat. My students need to learn how to cook and create low-cost, nutritious, healthy meals and snacks. They will learn self-sufficiency and cooperation as they study nutrition, share cultures and learn to cook while creating a cookbook.
My students desperately need to learn how to cook for themselves.
They need a refrigerator so they can learn how to prepare and store food properly. The kitchen equipment and cook books from this grant will enable them to learn to cook and take the first steps toward eating healthy meals and snacks
