Food and Clothing for the Needy

My students need jackets throughout the winter as they walk to school from their group homes and shelters. Others are simply living beneath the poverty line and unable to afford jackets that fit.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students have overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles, leaving many feeling both overlooked and under-served. While each child possesses the same spark as any other teenager, their walk-of-life has left them in need of individualized encouragement and support. The safe-space they encounter within my classroom for students with intellectual disabilities provides the structure, emotional support, and rigor needed to help them become productive members of society. Several of the necessary resources for an ID classroom, though, regularly go unfunded, limiting what I can do within the classroom and within our kitchen.

My Project

My students come from homes where they often go to bed hungry. These healthy snacks will often serve as their first meal of the day, and unfortunately often their last.

Throughout the fall, winter, and spring, several students are seen wearing jackets that do not fit or simply are tattered beyond belief.

Having purchased jackets for my students in the past, I wish I could convey the pride of a student who receives a new, clean jacket. They wear them with pride around school and their neighborhood.

This project will address two great needs among my Title I students: hunger and warmth.
