My Students

I work at a public, alternative high school in Rockford, Illinois, that serves the community’s highest-need students. Our students are at-risk of dropping out due to a variety of complex issues, as well as the need to fulfill adult responsibilities with which most high school students do not have to contend.

Students enroll here because they have chosen to persevere and overcome these obstacles in order to better their lives.

Over 90% of our students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. More than 15% are special education students, and over 20% come from homes where English is not the primary language. Though we provide students with an alternative pathway toward graduation, utilizing a maximum student: teacher ratio of 15:1, we are among only 15% of alternative schools nationwide that utilize a standards-based curriculum aligned with the district’s traditional high schools. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are not a diploma factory but instead an innovative institution where genuine, accelerated learning occurs.

Many of our students never found academic success before coming to our school. However, through the support and different approaches we use, they are able to excel.

My Project

Many of our students get hungry throughout the day. Even worse, they remain hungry even after they get home because there is not enough food for everyone. It is very hard for them to focus on academics when they are considered about having enough to eat.

I want to continue providing healthy snacks & bottled water for all our students (and their families) throughout the day and to take home.

No teenager should have to worry about having enough food to eat. I have a drawer in my classroom that is available to all students in the building. I keep it stocked with healthy snacks. Students also have access to bottled water from my fridge. This project will help me keep them stocked with breakfast bars, granola bars, apple sauce, Slim Jims, and bottled water. The look of relief on their faces they can take snacks & water for both them and their families is so rewarding. I love being able to take care of the entire student instead of just the academic side.
