My Students

My students are 5th and 6th grade struggling readers who need phonics instruction. They love "Wimpy Kid" books and listening to story CDs while following along in their books. They want to become proficient readers to expand their world!

We are an inner city school.

The majority of our student population qualifies for free or reduced lunch. Our students are African American, Hispanic, White, and ELL from around the globe. Our particular class consists of a range of 5th and 6th grade Special Needs students who are struggling readers.

My Project

My students need 13 Math and Literacy phonics instruction e-books, a set of Diary of a Wimpy Kid books and the CD, DVD, and 6 copies of the book, Where the Red Fern Grows. The students in my classroom need structured phonics instruction. Teaching phonics is a new skill for me, and I do not currently have adequate resources to purchase what I need to teach my students effectively. My goal is to bring my students up to grade level in reading. Donations of phonics instruction materials will help me to teach phonics to my 5th and 6th grade students to both my and their fullest potential. My students love the "Wimpy Kid" series books and have asked for a set for pleasure reading during downtime between assignments and/or classes. (The school library's editionsare always checked out.) My 6th grade class would benefit from the 6 copies of the book of "Where the Red Fern Grows", as we want to follow along in the book as we read the novel in class. We would also use the DVD and CD versions in our book study.

My goal is to bring my students up to grade level in reading.

It is a lofty goal, but with your support and donation of resources, I believe it can be done. I am not content with my students having enough to get by, I want them to have the very best instruction I can give them. I want my students to have the opportunity to learn the most they can every day.
