Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a teacher of seventh grade social studies in the Bronx, I challenge my students to imagine what America was like in its early years. We look at how this wide open land became a home to so many people from so many walks of life. We explore the course of events that led our founding fathers to choose liberty and the risks they took in doing so. We study the Constitution and how this living document still effects us today. We see how the Liberty Bell has been the beacon for movements throughout American history, from the abolition of slavery in the 19th century to women\'s rights and civil rights in the 20th. My kids have a difficult time visualizing what many of these important events were like. Many of my students have never been outside of New York City and their grasp of geography is limited. Some are first generation Americans for whom many of these names mean little. With this in mind, I am writing for your support to take my students to Philadelphia for a day to explore three places that will bring American history to life for them. We plan to leave early on a school day for the 2 hour bus ride and arrive in Philadelphia at around 9:30. Our first stop would be the Liberty Bell and a guided tour of Independence Hall. We would then head up the block to the National Constitution Center. Opened in 2003, the center offers a hands on introduction to the Constitution and shows how it has been interpreted over time. We would then get back on our bus and return back to the Bronx. Your support would go towards the bus for the students and the admission to the National Constitution Center. I can\'t stress enough the impact you will be making on the 45 students who will make this trip. Thank you very much on behalf of my 7th graders for your commitment to understanding the foundations of our country!
