Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are expected to learn to read and write, comprehend and compute, and they are only 5! The fabulous thing is that 5 year olds are like sponges, they want to take it all in.
They are shy, outgoing, energetic, capable, independent, yet inexperienced learners.
They are a wonderful mix of cultures and backgrounds. They are a part of a large public school that strives to help them become competent and successful learners.
My Project
The things we do, we don't forget. Active modeling of reading and reading behaviors allows the students to see what they will eventually be doing on their own, which is reading. These resources will help my students to "do" reading and not just learn about it. As they use these resources, they will initially follow along with the teacher, and in the process begin growing into independent readers. Children learn best from what they see. Constant modeling in the classroom with interactive reading materials will inspire them to read their own books. After reading the big book to the whole group, I will be able to put the smaller versions of the same title in a station for the children to model good reading habits. Our ultimate goal is for children to be life long learners and it begins with learning to read.
