My Students

In my Film Production 1 class, students are discovering first-hand the magic of making films. With limited resources, they complete short films that demonstrate key story (character, theme, irony, plot, etc.) and technical (angles, camera, sound, lighting, etc.) elements of cinema.

My school is multicultural.

Children of immigrants or immigrants themselves, my students are challenged economically and academically. They struggle to support their own families through part time jobs, or through household responsibilities. The combination of socioeconomic and academic struggles creates a great challenge for my community of students. Despite their economic hurdles, my students are avid learners who utilize whatever available resources they have to complete objectives. This year alone they made incredible projects with the limited resources available to them. They were excited to tackle the film challenges that I gave them, even if it meant struggling with outdated or nonfunctional technology.

My Project

A key role on film sets is that of the focus puller--the individual responsible for making sure that the lens is able to focus, for example, from one character to another. For beginner filmmakers, this is often not needed as they tend to shoot with auto-focus settings and a deeper depth of field where more elements are already in focus.

But as my students have gotten more filmmaking experience, they've been wanting to challenge themselves by shooting in manual modes.

Akin to driving a manual car, the practice requires great effort and decision-making. One of the most difficult aspects of that manual shooting is maintaining the focus. I'd like to provide my students with a focus-pulling system that can give them real-world experience in advanced cinematography. With this purchase, they'll have the opportunity to use equipment and techniques that they can directly apply to a professional film set.
