Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My second graders are from a high-poverty neighborhood and attend a culturally diverse school that is 100% free breakfast and lunch. Sadly, many of my students come from broken homes, shelters, and foster care.
They have challenges that come with poverty but always come to school ready to learn.
They come to school and give everything they have to their lessons no matter what is going on at home. They work hard. At seven and eight years old, they are just beginning to develop the habits they will need to be successful throughout their school lives.
My Project
My students are in need of folders, fidgets, and number lines to help them have a successful year as learners. Organization is an important skill that all students need to learn. The folders will allow my students to keep their math, writing, ELA, and science materials organized and at hand for smooth transitions throughout the day. The hanging folders will allow me to have all of my students data organized and easily available for our data meetings to discuss their progress.
By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their organization skills and academic achievement.
Number lines provide a mental strategy for addition and subtraction. Research has shown they're important because they promote good mental arithmetic strategies. These open number lines will allow my students the opportunity to practice this valuable skill increasing their math knowledge in addition and subtraction.
My students live in an urban neighborhood and face many stressful and challenging events in their daily lives but come to school daily ready to do their best. Having the fidget and sensory bundle will provide them a safe way to calm and destress throughout the day. My students will be able to take a calming break to destress allowing them to be ready to return to their work. The timer will allow us to stay focused and on task during our small group activities and help increase students awareness of elapsed time.
Since many of my students come from high poverty situations or broken homes, these materials will help them begin the year without families having to worry about the stress of buying school supplies.
