All of the students in my preschool program have developmental and communication delays and range in age from 3-5. My students work for 15-30 minute periods depending on their needs and require a 5 minute break between work blocks. All of my students enjoy and benefit from sensory integration. My students are high-needs and work on basic skills such as counting, colors, learning their name, daily life skills, and social skills. Despite their challenges with communication (many students are nonverbal), my students and staff team are a family. It is amazing to see our students reach milestones such as responding to their name, feeding themselves a snack, and playing with a peer. Our school is located in a neighborhood with a low socioeconomic status.
My Project
When you enter our classroom, it is my hope that you will see students working at tables or participating in a group activity in our circle area. What will make this picture different from other classrooms is that my students will be seated differently based on their learning needs. I am asking for flexible seating options such as wobble cushions, large pillows, and comfy floor chairs because these unique types of seating help my little students focus. Students will be able to wiggle and wobble which encourages physical and intellectual maturing.
With your support, materials from this project will help my students improve their ability to focus during work time.
This means that they will make progress faster and have the opportunity to experience even more learning opportunities!
