My students need the right tools to help them concentrate and thrive academically. The Teen Active Chairs will especially help my boys who struggle sitting at a desk! They also need a timer and privacy partitions.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are a diverse group of energetic, funny, and lovable seventh graders. They come from all over the city of Richmond, VA, to our ATS, ready to engage given the right tools. Among them are current and potential dancers, musicians, painters, and poets.
They are bursting with intelligence, because they are 13 years old, they need an active, well-stocked classroom so that they may express their ideas, feelings, and all that they are learning in a satisfying, hands-on manner.
My Project
The Active Chairs will help my students who have attention deficits stay in one place in the classroom. Allowing them to wiggle and move their bodies, these award-winning chairs just may be the key to focusing their minds.
The privacy screens will be an option for students who are easily distracted by their peers' very presence!
Allowing students use them if they wish will help them to develop self-regulation and self-advocacy skills.
The timers are also for helping students with self-management. I might say, "read for five minutes," that's it--let's set the timer! There is a sense of fun and control in doing this for the students. This is a low-tech "pomodoro app" that can be used to build confidence and stamina.
