This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Fifth grade is fabulous! Year after year, I have prepared the fifth grade students in my building for middle school. I teach in a wonderful school community in Southwest Detroit, where ninety percent of the students are Latino and one hundred percent receive free lunch. Eighty-five percent of my students learn English as a second language.

My students are expected to focus and concentrate more fiercely than the average fifth grader because many of them only speak English while in school.

This attention to focus can be exhausting for some students. Couple that with some sensory or other attention disruptions and maintaining your focus and engagement for the day can be difficult.

We are here to persevere! The students are wonderful and with a few additional supplies, they can and will succeed!

My Project

Our curriculum calls for a substantial amount of time spent working in groups. This type of environment is excellent for learning. However, in a small classroom with over 30 students, it can also create numerous distractions.

Noise cancelling headphones will help to reduce distractions while working in groups.

Much of the group work entails working with others and those students won't be wearing the "Focus Phones". I envision the students in the independent reading and writing area wearing the "Focus Phones". These two groups of students require silence in order to "focus" or concentrate.

The "Focus Phones" are the perfect solution to helping students concentrate in a busy and learning centered classroom. They can work with their group and when they need to block out the discussions of nearby groups, the "Focus Phones" will allow them that capability.
