Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most of my students will enter 1st grade below grade level. This is due to lack of parent support and motivation. My challenge is to not only get them to grade level but to exceed those expectations. The materials requested will help those very low students with fluency and confidence when reading.
My students love coming to school.
It is the place where they know what to expect and what is expected of them. Most of them come from difficult homes where parents don't take an interest in them or their learning. At school I can offer them the foundation they will need throughout their educational career to be successful. They receive structure, love, support and guidance that will help in all academic areas but also when learning social skills. My school is located in an economically depressed community and often time we are not provided with the resources necessary to reach our academic goals.
My Project
Their are many important aspects of teaching literacy in the classroom, but I am focusing on fluency to build comprehension. If a child can read the page fluently, they can focus on building connections with the story and get a deeper understanding of its meaning. My goal is for my students to use these materials to read quickly, accurately and with expression. In my classroom we do not have the materials to develop this skill for early readers. My classroom needs: books to build fluency. I selected decodable, word family fairy tales and weekly readers. This will encourage the students to read by featuring current events, seasonal articles and focusing on our curriculum in a completely different way. All of these materials will help them practice reading to build fluency as well as teacher guides to build fluency. Students will be able to use the requested materials in guided reading groups, centers, whole group instruction and for homework.
This project will give my students the opportunity to build on their fluency with developmentally appropriate materials that will not frustrate them.
Students should be challenged, but not overwhelmed. These materials can be used year after year to build strong readers. I want my students to love reading and with your help, we can accomplish this task!
