Focus, Calm Down Corner, and Alternative Seating in 4th Grade

My Students
This year I will be teaching fourth grade. Our district is very diverse and we have approximately 60% English language learners.
Our students come from a wide range of different socioeconomic backgrounds.
Over 60% of our students receive a free lunch. Our school also has a wide range of academic levels. Our school supports this wide range with programs like our Response to Intervention Reading Program (RTI.) Teachers regularly meet to look at student learning, assessments, and examine our practice.
I am inspired every day by the young people we serve. Many of our students face adversity in their lives yet come to school eager to learn each day. Our families come from diverse backgrounds and come together to support and celebrate these kids. Also, our staff works tirelessly and passionately to bring quality instruction to our students. I'm so very proud to be a part of this community.
My Project
Over the years I have had more and more students struggling with attention and trauma. Many kids come to school carrying so much from their home lives. It is heartbreaking to learn of traumas, losses, and challenges that some kids have experienced. When they come to school they carry these experiences and it can really get in the way of their learning. I have found that there are a lot of great tools to help these kids at school.
I am hoping to have a variety of seating options, sensory toys, and fidget tools to help students that struggle with attention or are dealing with trauma.
In my cart you will see a variety of seating options that could work for different kids. Some kids really need to wiggle in order to stay engaged in learning activities. You will also see a variety of fidget toys and sensory tools. Some of these could be checked out to students for individual use. However, I would also like to create a "Calm Down Space" in the classroom that all students could use as needed. They beach poster would be used to decorate the space with a calming image. Some fidgets would be there to help students calm down by engaging with different sensory activities. The bubble timers can be used for calming down, and for self regulating how much time they stay in the calming space. I will also be training the students on a variety of calming down strategies that will be listed on a poster in the space. They can use these strategies and tools to help gain life long methods in regulating big emotions.
