My Students

A chair scrapes the floor, someone laughs, a student coughs, kids talk in hall, papers rustle, a teacher speaks to another student, ... How on earth can a student concentrate on the lesson at hand? How can he/she hear the correct sounds of the new vocabulary words?

Our classroom is in a public school in northern Maine.

I teach a self-contained classroom of 13 to 15 special education students - students who are easily distracted and have difficulty concentrating without all the additional classroom noises. Despite disabilities, my students work very hard and get frustrated with distractions.

My Project

My school purchased a top-quality English curriculum for our class. The students enjoy the books and the online work; however, our headphones are inexpensive and do not block out regular classroom noises, making it difficult for the students to hear the proper sounds for spelling or decoding words. It is difficult to focus and to concentrate on their lessons with the noises competing for their attention.

Our reading program is excellent, but without the quality headphones requested, the students are not getting the full benefit of the program.

The reading program is extremely important for them all, but especially so for the students hoping to go to college after graduation.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
