This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at the most wonderful school in New York! Our kids are truly amazing and deserve every resource under the sun. It's hard to imagine what life would be like for our kids if being needy wasn't a constant obstacle. They have experienced more than an average adult and know disappointment and desperation inside and out. My job can be heartbreaking at times. To combat this, I do my very best to bring to them the beautiful things this world has to offer. I am not alone in this crusade, as there are many other educators in my school who strive to do the same.
We have recently changed the name of our school to the School of the Performing Arts and are beginning all sorts of programs for our students with music in mind. We have a ballroom dancing team, a recorder club, a singing choir and even a guitar group. Fortunately, we have a staff member who played flute for many years and can't wait to share her love for the flute with a group of ten lucky second graders. These second graders will take lessons after school and continue each year as they advance through the grades. I will be coordinating this enrichment activity and watching them grow into young flutists! Learning to play an instrument will give them an advantage in applying for competitive middle and high schools. It also offers them a wholesome pastime different from hours of video games.
To make this program a reality, we need 10 flutes, which will be stored in a safe in my classroom throughout the school day. These flutes will be used for lessons and will be sent home for practice on weekends only. The students will use these flutes for a total of 4 years!
Please help us place flutes in our kids' hands. And the best part is.... YOU will be the guest of honor at their very first performance in the spring!
