This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the privilege of teaching amazing preschool students with autism. Watching their growth from the time they start school when they are 2.9 years old, until they are ready for kindergarten is truly remarkable! Children who are in school at such a young age present with some unique needs. Due to their disability, most are still working on toilet training.

Toileting and personal hygiene are a big focus of our day, as they are essential skills for kindergarten ready students.

Two-way communication is also an important component of our program because many of our students are non-verbal or have limited purposeful communication. Students benefit from daily back and forth communication between home and school.

My Project

Toilet training is an important yet time consuming part of our day. My students need a place to store diapers and clean clothes for toileting. They will gain independence if they have their own storage drawer in which their clean diapers and clothes are kept so they can quickly retrieve them on their way to the bathroom. Having toileting and hygiene supplies neatly stored and readily available will promote independent self-help skills and minimize time away from classroom learning.

Keeping hands, faces, tables, and chairs clean with personal and cleaning wipes will help prevent the spread of illness.

This will also increase time on learning by reducing absences and keeping everyone feeling their best and ready to learn!

Parent communication is also important, and this is achieved through the use of binders that we write back and forth to each other in, which allows me to communicate with parents on a daily basis.
