Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend an elementary school in an impoverished economic region of Kern County and need additional support to address diverse issues and the encouragement to create positive changes in their community. Students come from all backgrounds and ethnic backgrounds.
While we have the basic needs met, we often require additional tools to enhance and support our creative learning experience.
As our classroom funding is limited, students look to their teachers for the adventure in learning, including making math come alive, writing about the art they drew, or conducting experiments.
My Project
Our students like to learn, they like to explore, and they need access to more information in a variety of text. Often we have the same literature, limited computer access, and materials that do not update annually. The fluency card bank will focus on literacy skills, allowing students to create common sounding words into new words. The phonics clip book will encourage reading of different topics. Nonfiction cards will ease students into common topics throughout the year.
We need text accessible (smaller print) at levels which allow our students to learn and mature into their current grade level.
Unfortunately, our students come from different locations and start school late. Our goal is to catch them up to grade level by starting at their ability and gradually working their skills up to grade level. It's an amazing feeling to see our students grow when they have access to materials.
