Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The motto at my urban elementary school is "Outstanding World Leaders". The staff, students and families have created a community that supports each scholar on their path towards greater achievement. In my role as a reading interventionist I have the honor of working with a diverse group of struggling readers from grades 1-5. The scholars have been working really hard this year to solidify their foundational reading skills and have completed 3 author studies so far.
My students are engaged and motivated to reach their end-of-year reading goals.
Since joining my intervention group in the fall my students have moved up between and 2 and 5 reading levels and they still aim higher. They are true inspirations to our school community.
My Project
High interest hip hop videos to teach "author's purpose" and a rap about the word "peer"; why didn't I think of that? The Flocabulary learning program uses a multisensory approach to teach vocabulary of both tier 2 and content specific words. I currently incorporate videos to teach content and reading strategies and notice that my students are not only engaged during the lessons, but retain the information as well. My students have improved their decoding ability substantially this year, which allows us to now focus more intensely on reading comprehension. Having access to a more comprehensive program will allow me to be more strategic with my lessons and have the ability to differentiate based on the needs of my students.
With this new approach to teaching vocabulary, my students will become active participants in deepening their understanding of key vocabulary that they encounter in their reading.
Coupling this new vocabulary program with an author study will allow my students to deepen their understanding of the books we are reading. Each year my students escape into the fantastic worlds created by one of our favorite authors, Roald Dahl. His books are requested over and over and I'd like to supplement my current collection with new titles and replace those well-loved books with new copies.
