This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are from a large, urban community that is made up of various ethnicities from all over the world. We are a title I school and we educate a large population of English Language Leaners (ELL) as well as students who live below the poverty line. Free breakfast and lunch are available to every student in our building each day.
My students love to learn!
They are especially motivated by hands-on projects that get them thinking outside of the box and help them to develop leadership skills. The students in my class are clever and caring young people, with bright futures ahead of them!
My Project
STEM projects are a wonderful way for getting students to think about how what they are learning in school will help them in the real world. For this STEM project, we are looking for materials that will help us in our study of weather. Students will determine ways to prevent flood waters from damaging property. What better way to discover the answers than through a hands-on STEM project?! Students will work in partners to design and build a method of preventing their "house" (small cardboard box) from being damaged by a given amount of flood water (measured by beakers). Students will use the materials below (cotton balls, clay, cups, straws, etc.) to construct their method of water damage prevention. Once we have tested our designs, we will go back and make improvements to our structures based on the results of our experiment, like any good scientist would!
This project will not only help my students learn the content, but will also help them build a love for Science and STEM!
