Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In our constructivist classroom, students choose between different resources in order to learn about science and complete projects. Our biggest challenge is being able to have the resources necessary for students to work independently at their own pace.
We are a socio-economically, culturally and racially diverse community of students.
We foster creativity and academic excellence; our students learn with and from each other in an experience-centered, inquiry-based learning environment. With participation from our entire community, we strive to instill in each student a dedication to improving the world we inhabit. Our goal is to provide a challenging, constructivist learning environment, with the arts, sciences and physical education integrated into the standards-based curriculum, that inspires independent thinking, imagination and a passion for learning.
My Project
A lecture about a science topic would take me over an hour to get through live in the classroom due to the many disruptions that occur in a seventh grade classroom. Even if I do get through the material, I cannot be sure that students heard everything I said. With a Wacom - Intuos Creative Pen and Medium Touch Tablet, I can create a video lecture that is 15 minutes long and get through the same amount of material that would take me 60 minutes in class. Plus, students can pause and rewind the videos if they need clarification of the material. Using the Wacom tablet, I can write important notes as I speak, so that I can model note-taking. I can draw pictures to give students visual representations of the material. Essentially, I can present the material in different ways in order to provide access to the content for all types of learners.
The ability to make videos allows for more class time for students to have more opportunities to experience science, rather than just read about it or listen to me talk about it.
Videos allow students the time they need to grasp the material, whether they need to watch the video one time or twenty times. The students who understand concepts quickly will have more time to delve deeper into the content and the students who require more time can get it free from embarrassment.
