Flippin' Awesome Books: A Video Book Talk Project

My students need a flip video camera (with battery pack and cables) to quickly tape book talks, projects, and findings in and around school.

My Students

Our students live in a digital age. As educators, we must meet and surpass the goals set forth by the state in order for our students to perform well on state-mandated tests. Using digital media in our classroom helps to meet those standards and achieve advanced scoring on those tests.

In Reading, students are required to read multiple novels throughout the school year.

As real readers, we don’t make dioramas, posters, or displays to demonstrate our understanding of the novel. Instead, we discuss the books we’ve read, are reading, or plan to read. Real-world readers (i.e. adults, book clubs, Oprah) spend time looking at and reading reviews of books on-line, in our newspapers, and through discussion of our selections with peers. Students need to become life-long readers. They need to know how to find books that appeal to their interest. What better way to introduce students to this than through the use of their own recordings and publishing of book talks through safe, county approved websites (www.teachertube.net)? Our Goal: To reach a wide variety of audience members and present an oral presentation, via the Internet, using a flip camera. We are already reaching our classmates; we want to touch the world!

My Project

Students will read self-selected novels and present “talks” about their novels. These mini-trailers will serve as a resource for students to choose additional books to read throughout the school year. Throughout the year, students will record book talks using the flip camera, and upload it to the school website or a secure video web site, teachertube.net. As long as the technology is there, students will be able to use the flip camera to record their “commercials” or “trailers” for their selected book/novel.

Students love technology.

Students love talking to their peers. They will read any book another student recommends. To put this type of technology in their hands on any given class day, they can touch the world with their stories. I want students to love to read so that THEY can inspire others. I want them to feel needed with their book talks. I want their peers to be rushing to the computers to watch the latest book talks, and have a waiting list in the library to check out those books.
