My Students

My students are simply amazing. Imagine - in this day and age that - that there are young people who are excited about learning and that this love for knowledge and understanding is intrinsically sourced. I want to help them channel their positive energy toward a true appreciation for science.

My students are from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic background.

They are excited about learning, but are sometimes frustrated by the complexity of the material. I want to move more and more away from teacher centered to a student centered instruction by employing collaborative learning activities that allow them to learn from one another. My High School is an alternative high school in California and many of our students are ethnic minorities (primarily Asian and Latino). We have relatively high student retention and matriculation rate and many of our students go on to higher education.

My Project

My students and I are experimenting with the flipped-classroom model of teaching and learning. This is where students review posted (on Internet) lectures and other course content at home and work on all other written work, including traditional homework, problem sets, and lab investigation in the classroom. This approach is "flipped" in that "homework" is done in the classroom and traditional classroom "lectures" are done at home. This way all students have direct access to assistance from teacher and peers when doing course related work. It addresses equity issues with respect to those who may not have parental support due to lack of relevant knowledge and skills for completing assignments. To make this work, we need to be able to record short video clips of students and me (the teacher) explaining specific concepts. These clips will be reviewed by me for accuracy and thoroughness before being posted on the course cloud-drive for all students to access.

This project will make our flipped-classroom model much more dynamic.

As of now, we are limited to videos that are linked from YouTube. Through this project, students can get excited about specific concepts and develop creative ways of presenting the material to their peers. This facilitates a deep mastery of the specific concept.
