This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a low-income school district on the outskirts of Philadelphia. Most of my students come from home situations that are far from perfect, yet they come to school each day with a positive attitude and are eager to learn. My class is a remedial English class, which means that my students read well-below an 8th grade level. Most of my students speak English as a second language and have come to the United States within the last 5 years. I also teach many students with learning disabilities who have various academic and behavior challenges.
With this challenging group of learners, it’s often difficult to motivate them and keep them engaged.
Some of them feel bad about themselves because they are in a remedial class and cannot compete academically with peers. I try very hard to make my classroom a safe haven for these students—a place where they don’t have to be embarrassed about what they can’t do and where they can focus on what they can do to become a better reader and student.
My Project
My students lack confidence in reading and writing because they have been in the "lowest" class year after year. They are aware that their skills do not match those of their peers, and they often act out to compensate for these deficiencies.
One thing that really makes a difference for struggling readers is using technology to increase engagement and learning.
Their reading program gives them access to a huge online library; the problem is that we don't have the technology to utilize this part of the program. The students would greatly benefit from using tablets for independent reading. Students also love to publish their writing. It builds confidence and increases reading fluency when they share their writing with classmates. Having an up-to-date, color printer in the classroom would allow students to be creative when publishing their writing and motivate them to share their writing with others. I've also picked out some comfortable chairs to use in the reading nook, so that students can relax and read.
Some of the items I've requested may seem very random, but all are needed and will serve an important purpose in my classroom. The document reader will allow me to pull up worksheets on the Smartboard so students better keep up with guided reading assignments. The movable whiteboard will allow me to provide specific learning objectives and instructions to smaller groups of children within the classroom. I've also selected many organizational tools for use with the new technology in the classroom including a charging station, headphone cases, and a pocket organizer for student materials. These items will increase productivity in my classroom by allowing me to maintain organization of our materials.
