My Students

Our school system was one of the only in the state of Virginia to not only cut about 300 jobs, but also cut teacher pay by 2%. With these cuts, teacher are scrambling to find the ways to get the supplies they need to meet academic goals.

We have almost 900 students in a school that serves children with so many needs.

I'm a 2nd grade inclusion teacher serving both regular ed and special education needs. But, what we always need is more money, more time, and more hands! Technology for 21st century skills has become key focus in how we create lessons. This project aims to address some of our problems and our challenges.

My Project

I'm the PTA VP in charge of fundraising as well. We always need money, but asking parents to buy wrapping paper and calendars just seems like poor judgment in this economy. Our students are required to learn how to use video and digital cameras to make PowerPoint, slide-shows, and edited videos. Why not tie that goal into one to raise money and share memories with our parents! Our students are going to record the significant, the funny, the serious, and the crazy moments of our school year. As they do, they'll load them into a folder on our server. Then, our PTA volunteers will work with my class to edit the video clips, dub in music, and commentate, and burn our masterpiece to DVD's!

How can this help our fundraising efforts?

We'll invite families to come and watch our movie at the end of the year as a fundraiser and sell popcorn, candy, and drinks. Anyone wanting a copy of this video yearbook will be able to purchase them that night and the money made will support more projects! The students can volunteer to manage the sales and additional orders if we run out! Now that's solving an economic problem with a yearlong lesson in technology and economics! Future Entrepreneurs!
