Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are first and second graders in a special day class. We don't really focus on their "label" but on what they are ABLE to do, and build from there. I allow my kids to take charge of their learning and vote on what the months theme will be. We have learned about bears, sharks, volcanoes and insects.
I have built and fostered an environment where new and past students can feel safe and loved. We do have students that come from homeless shelters, programs, single family homes, farm-worker parents and foster care.
Although they have many obstacles in their lives, a barrier to receiving a proper education is not one of them.
My Project
My students are in need of developing their fine motor skills. I have first and second graders that have not developed hand strength and some that can't grip a pencil. Unfortunately, we don't have an Occupational Therapist that works one on one with our children unless they receive services.
I have taken the challenge to improve my little ones fine motor skills.
I am hoping to use the following items during independent / exploration station. I am hoping these fun games like the Monkeying around and the fruit avalanche games will be a fun way to help my kids with their hand skills. The Geoboards will be used to build 2D shapes as well as building their finger strength. The stampers, mazes and lacing will improve coordination.
