I teach 7th grade ELA to over 100 students in a suburb right outside of Detroit, Michigan. The school has approximately 75% of the students who qualify for free and reduced lunch. I am diligently working to create collaborative, successful learners. In the classroom, we are building skills that empower the students to become independent learners. Environment is everything and humans respond positively to peaceful atmospheres.
My general education 7th graders are inquisitive, creative young boys and girls who love learning and they are working towards being collaborative learners through alternative seating.
Research shows that students are able to focus and do their best work when they are comfortable and engaged in high-level content. I would like to purchase flexible seating for the students, changing the workspace environment builds a greater sense of community in the classroom.
In a 21st century classroom, students are more productive when they have the ability to access learning in different ways. I have a host of learning styles and feel that my kinesthetic and spatial learners would love the comfort of a standing desk or floor seating. This new learning environment would also benefit Interpersonal and Intrapersonal learners.
