Help me give my students cushions, chair bands, a seating set, stools, bean bag chairs, balance balls, lap desks, and whatever else they need in order to be successful with flexible seating!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have the distinct honor of teaching some very energetic, excited, loving, and creative fifth graders! I teach at a Title I school here in Louisiana. When I'm in the classroom, my students become my "kids." I always tell them, " If you work hard and believe in yourselves, you are limitless!"
I have noticed that a lot of my students' reading and math skills are below the fifth grade level, which is usually a result for poor living situations at home.
I am blessed to have such a wonderful mix of so many different kinds of learners! Some are kinesthetic learners, some are auditory learners, others are visual learners, and the list goes on and on! Reaching them and meeting them where they are academically so that they can actually have a chance at succeeding not only in the classroom, but far beyond the classroom as well. I love my students because they are the most genuine, compassionate, lovable, brilliant, diverse, determined, strong, and inspiring people I know! They inspire me to be a better teacher daily. I am filled with the most joy when I see them progress in their academic and social learning.
My Project
My class is very active. Some of them cannot sit still for more than 5 minutes. A lot of my students have trouble focusing, which ultimately has an effect on their academics. Oftentimes, they express great frustration about this, and it breaks my heart. These particular students often struggle to be quiet and to stay seated while I'm teaching, which causes several disturbances throughout the day. I believe that implementing flexible seating with cushions, chair bands, a seating set, stools, bean bag chairs, balance balls, lap desks, and other products would be extremely beneficial for all of my students because they will be able to learn in a nontraditional manner that meets their individual needs. It will also help those who struggle focusing during instructional time. Lastly, it will provide my students with motivation to learn every single day.
