My Students
I teach ELA, math, science and social studies to engaged and creative second graders. My school is an elementary school located in rural Lexington, SC. Our school is a stable place for the kids in our community. They come to school with various background experiences, many of them being difficult. Often their situations cause them to be distracted or emotionally detached from their learning. Despite their situations, my students are eager to learn and do their best. About 60% of the students are below the poverty line and many students receive snack sacks to take home on the weekend.
My goal is to create a welcoming environment with learning opportunities that foster social, emotional, and academic choices, so they can create a foundation successful future.
I can't control their home lives, but I can control the creation of a loving and thriving classroom environment.
My Project
The traditional classroom, desk and chair environment, doesn't foster the creative potential of the diverse learning needs my students have. They sit stagnant for hours at a time doing subject related activities. I have introduced some flexible seating options and my students have responded positively by improving their academics and focus. Unfortunately, my resources are limited to provide better flexible seating options that work for all students.
My goal is to give my classroom a makeover that fits my students' diverse learning and behavioral styles.
The wobbly chairs and balance ball seats will provide the movement needed while students are actively engaged in daily learning tasks. Students will get to choose their seating weekly and rotate every couple days. This will allow them to build the understanding of choice and how to make choices that drive their learning!
