Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are talented and creative! They also have very difficult lives. Unfortunately, they are in a school where over 80% of our school population lives at or below the poverty level. Getting their daily needs met can be a challenge.
It is a difficult task to teach students to love school because living in the city is quite a challenging experience.
Working in an inner city I get to see a variety of challenges. I see students who do not have many basic needs being met at home. Missing a meal or wearing dirty clothes is a common occurrence. Even with this type of hardship, they come to school with a smile on their face!
My Project
Every year we request new desks and chairs for our classrooms. We need bookshelves and tables. We need storage and carpeting. Every year we are told, maybe next year. It's a sad reality but our school district can not support the needs of our classrooms.
My students are unique and need flexible seating to get the most out of their day!
Most of our desks are scratched or wobbly. All of our chairs have been worn down and the legs are never even. The bottoms of the chairs have broken off making each student rock back and forth. I'd like to get rid of my chairs and get my kids comfortable on the floor! We would convert our old classroom into something new. We would use low circle tables and pillows in place of desks.
Our bookshelves are being held together with duct tape. It looks rough but we do our best to make it work. New ones would make a huge difference! Each child would get a special place on each bookshelf for their belongings. Getting new carpets will allow my entire classroom to be completely covered. This will support my students working on the floor. The overall struggle to make the learning environment supportive is a huge challenge to say the least.
